Carpets

I grew up in a house filled with carpet and it holds a special place in my heart.  I think of carpet, I think of warmth and fuzziness; it’s soft and cuddly and will keep your feet warm during cold nights, not that there’s that many in Arizona, but still.

Carpets are the cheapest of the bunch, beating out wood and tile, but unfortunately it also has to be replaced every 10 to 30 years depending on maintenance and the number of people in your home.

Carpets have an unfortunate tendency to trap dust and dirt, so it can pose as a problem for those with respiratory problems and younger infants.  If you don’t regularly clean them every month or two, expect to feel the effects.  Carpets can get stained and trap odors.  If you’re not careful, spilled drinks or untrained pets can easily transform your day into a cleaning battle royale.  It’s definitely something to watch out for.

Carpets can add that special touch to a home to really make it feel like a “home.”  It’s cheap and maintainable, doesn’t have to be replaced for many years, and will give your precious feet a level of comfort that harder flooring can’t provide.

Hardwood Flooring

Ah, hardwood flooring.  Regarded as fine and more luxurious, hardwood flooring can transform an otherwise average looking home into a magical one.  They’re expensive but will last you a lifetime, and you will never have to worry twice about replacing them; though your grandchildren might.

The fine look of real hardwood floors comes with a cost, the material alone versus carpeting can be up to twice as much.

Children and pets are a mixed blessing as well.  You will have to pay careful attention to have them avoid scratching up the wood, and spills should be cleaned up immediately, otherwise moisture can leak into the wood and cause damage to its integrity.

Hardwood floors are a great long term investment and will save you money in the long run if maintained properly.  They look phenomenal in any home and are sure to “wow!” your guests.

Tile

Finally we have tile, a clean and classy look for any space.  Tile is more expensive than carpet and competes with hardwood flooring but offers the best choice for a long term investment.  Tile will last as long as hardwood floors, but with lower maintenance.  With tile, you can neglect them as long as you like and they can be easily restored to new again.  You can’t say that about carpet or wood and that’s what makes tile a great choice for busy mothers on the go.

Clean, classy, and safe, one might call tile the gentleman of the three floors.  Always a solid choice no doubt!

Myth: I can get a better deal if I buy through the internet department versus walking in the dealership.

Busted! Truth be told, there is no better or worse deal to be had. I’ve seen great deals be given to walk in customers and customers who inquire online equally. The Internet is a great place to get information about the car you are researching and the dealer you want to buy from. Doing preliminary research is a great way to cut down on your time at the dealership. Know your budget and what you can or are willing to spend on your new car.

Myth: I can get a better deal if I pay cash for a car.

Busted! Dealers are often more willing to give you a better deal on the selling price if they know you are financing. There are incentives for the dealership when we send business to the banks.  In today’s current economy banks are offering very low interest rates, even on used cars, to people with great credit! Why not take advantage of a super low interest rate while keeping your hard earned cash in investments that can be earning you interest. I always ask my customers this question “Why spend your hard earned money on a depreciating asset?”… Just food for thought, but it is a question not many people consider.

Myth:  Dealers will recommend services I don’t need.

Busted! Because consumers hold Dealers to a higher standard we take our recommendations to you very seriously.  Typically dealers may recommend items that another shop or independent service station may reject as “needed”. Firstly, everyone’s opinion of “needed repairs” will vary person to person. But from the dealer perspective our job is to make sure your vehicle is taken care of to the highest possible degree. Sometimes we make recommendations based on time or mileage. For example, timing belts should be replaced every 5 years or 60,000 miles regardless of what their condition looks like to the naked eye. Many times internal damage can occur after that amount of time and that can leave you stranded. We would rather be safe than sorry in a case like that. Ask your service provider to organize the recommendations by urgency so you can plan your budget accordingly. Not all items have to be taken care of at the same time.

 Power Tip! When you have recommendations from your shop ask them to prioritize the items recommended in the following category:

Urgent needed ASAP

If you are a Halloween lover like us, you will understand how amazing it is that Monsterland, the once premiere seasonal haunted house/museum in Mesa, AZ is now open for business as a bar  and grill year round!  Having just had their grand opening in April, on Friday the 13^th, they are already flourishing with an online presence.

We were lucky enough to get a private tour of not only the restaurant and bar area but also the basement, where they have their seasonal Halloween haunted houses in October.

From replicas of werewolves featured in the movie American Werewolf in Paris, to actual props from the movie 300, this place goes above and beyond to give you an authentic experience. It is so much more than just going out to get a meal or a drink.  It is truly an exceptional adventure.  Even people not so into horror movies will be impressed by this venue.  And the restaurant area isn’t too scary for kids either!

Locally owned and family run, the restaurant is family friendly until 9pm, when it then becomes a 21 and over bar.  The maze, props, and staging set such an incredible atmosphere you can’t help but look around and constantly find something new popping out at you!

The staff was incredibly kind, helpful, and enthusiastic about their place.  They made us feel right at home (a very scary home), and they are doing such an incredible job with weekly scheduling of all sorts of creative and fun events to please everyone.  An element of culture this city is really starving for.  To me one of the most impressive things in the restaurant area was the band stage elevated on a balcony of castle walls far above the crowd.  The bands apparently always dress to impress according to whatever themed event is going on and guests wearing costumes are always welcome and applauded.

The art and culture they are bringing to Arizona, and mostly the valley, is beyond words, and I am so thrilled to see such a great idea come to pass. We did not want to leave.

They even offer bottle service in their impressive VIP room complete with a life size alien from Alien vs Predator.

This is one of the most unique places we have found in the valley, east or west, and I think anyone and everyone needs to check it out.  For a scary good time…. come to Monsterland!!

DON’T GRADUATE!  STAY IN SCHOOL!

Call your advisor now and tell him or her that you can’t graduate because you forgot to minor in Ethiopian dance or something like that.   I know you think finals are difficult, time-consuming and stressful, but do you want to know what’s worse?  REAL LIFE.   College is nothing compared to working and being an “adult.” Believe me.   And unless you were fortunate enough to get your college paid for by your parents or a scholarship, you’ll be responsible for all of the loans you used to pay for that fine education.   Student loan companies are like a psycho ex…only you can’t file a restraining order against them and they don’t stop until they’ve ruined you.

After graduation comes employment.   And unless nepotism hands you your “dream job” right out of college, you’ll be stuck with two choices: 1) An office job where you’ll develop an unhealthy relationship with inanimate objects like staplers and Post-it notes AND you’ll learn more about copy machines than you’ve ever wanted to know.   OR  2) Grad school.   A place where you can hide from what I like to refer to as the Cube Jungle (office life) while adding to your undergraduate debt that you can only hope to later stack onto someone else through marriage.   I know this is harsh since everyone’s been telling you that you can do anything you want to with a 4-year college degree, but you can’t.   So before you march down in a polyester gown to pick up your diploma, stop and do the right thing.   Drive your car over to the nearest community college and enroll in their dental hygiene program.   It’s a far more logical path than trying to use that humanities degree.   At least with dental hygiene you can finish studying in less than 2 years, you are guaranteed a decent salary right out of school and you get to wear pajamas all day.   I also highly recommend that you all familiarize yourselves with the term forbearance.   If you’re anything like me, it’ll become your best friend after college.  Congratulations!

The reality of the Cube Jungle 

What really happens in and around those padded paneled walls. 

I’ve worked many different office jobs over the past nine years; however, that was never my dream.  As a little girl I never thought to myself, “When I grow up I want to spend each day sitting at a desk where I can eat frozen lunches and get carpal tunnel by the age of 32.”  When I graduated from the University of Wisconsin River Falls in 2003, I had dreams of becoming a freelance writer/part-time ankle model (it’s really the thinnest/fiercest part of my body), but soon after graduation, reality sank in.  I realized that freelance writing/ankle model professions were few and far between and didn’t offer a medical/dental package or a steady paycheck.  Almost immediately after excitedly tossing my graduation cap in the air with what I believed to be the world at my fingertips, I reluctantly settled into an office job in a Cube Jungle. 

Every Cube Jungle I’ve ever worked in has had lackluster decor.  Despite colors like orange and red which are said to create inspiration and excitement, most offices are drab in color.  They tend to be many shades of brown and gray, which I believe are the universal colors for apathy and boredom.  And any “art” displayed on the walls can best be described as a Big Lots bargain bin find.  I imagine that most corporate interior designers go into each office decorating project thinking, “How can I make this space have all the feel of a doctor’s office without the smell of latex?”  Their idea of Feng Shui seems to be uniformed plants and a water cooler in every corner because we all know that dehydration leads to a thirst for stealing office supplies.  However, after working for only a short period I realized that the real color in every office derives from its employees.  The best part of every Cube Jungle is its diverse cast of crazy characters.  Some of which, you may know…

• Every office has the co-worker who is fanatical about his or her pet(s).  Whether it is a dog, cat, iguana or ferret, he or she takes every opportunity to discuss with you what the pet has been up to.  Like a proud parent, I had a coworker named Barb stand before me and explain (in great length) how Abby, her new Springer Spaniel (who also just happened to be in 17 framed photos on her desk), had graduated from puppy pads to the carpet and how she just loved the taste of Pine-Sol.  And despite the veterinarian’s insistence that drinking floor cleaner would seriously harm the dog, Barb didn’t see how a “little bump of Pine-Sol” could hurt.  “It makes her so happy.  She told me so,” Barb declared loudly without a hint of shame or humor.  Recently I was also cornered by a coworker who wanted to show me “a few pics” of her dogs.  She has five.  Reluctantly I agreed and quickly “a few pictures” turned into 182 as she slowly scrolled through her digital camera, stopping to explain to me what the dogs were doing in every single picture.  “Oh that’s Dottie.  She’s sitting on the couch.  My husband doesn’t like when she sits on the couch, but he wasn’t home so I let her.  And right next to her is Coco.  Coco and Dottie sleep in the bed with me.  They take up almost the entire queen size bed.  So now my husband sleeps in the living room,” she explained.  “Yes, Great Danes will do that,” I replied.

• The coworker who doesn’t pause or even breathe in between sentences.  He or she monopolizes conversations and tends to share a little too much.  I once had a coworker share with me how she and her husband spent quality time together.  “We make sure to take a bath together every night.” I tried to think of anything else while she continued talking about their baths and the monogrammed loofahs they used to clean one another.  “Think about baseball.  Think about baseball,” I thought as she continued.  I figured if it works for men, why not me.  And sure enough, it worked.  I didn’t puke.

• The coworker who doesn’t wash his or her hands after leaving the restroom or licks his or her fingertips before handing you documents from the printer.  Maybe it’s the OCD in me, but whenever I see this, I want to bath my hands, arms and eyeballs in Purell.

• The coworker who asks what the weather is like every time you return from lunch.”What’s it like out there?” they inquire as if they’ve never been outside before.  I like to respond, “It’s the end of times and there are kitties everywhere.  Whatever you do, don’t feed them after midnight,” and then run away.

• The coworker who eats your lunch out of the office refrigerator.  Sure, that coworker may be me, but I’m not in denial.  I can see how this type of behavior would get on a person’s nerves.  But seriously, how do you expect a girl to walk away from an untouched Philly cheese steak sandwich?  Impossible!

• The coworker who leans over your desk to smell your lunch.  I don’t know what it is about the office, but it’s the only place where anyone will lean over your pre-packaged, processed frozen meal and say, “That smells delicious.”

• The coworker who loudly announces your arrival when you’re late for work.  “Thanks for finally joining us,” he or she says after you’ve successfully sat at your desk and arranged your computer and paperwork to appear as if you’ve been there for hours.

• The coworker who always wants to talk about Dancing with the Stars.  Even though you tell her everyday that you don’t watch that show.   In my case, her name is Stephanie.  While I appreciate Stephanie’s extensive knowledge of each DWTS cast member, when I asked her who the vice president was, she just looked at me confused and said, “I’m pretty sure it’s that one guy who can’t spell potato and shot his friend in the face while hunting.” Close enough, Steph.

• The coworker who walks over to your desk to ask if you’ve responded to an email he or she sent 30 seconds prior.  My favorite response to this coworker is, “Sorry, I’ve haven’t had time yet because I’ve been really busy obsessively counting my arm hair and fantasizing about your retirement.”

• The coworker who enjoys walking around the office announcing how busy he or she is.  Okay Carl.  You win!  You are the hardest worker.  Now keep it down, I’m trying to watch episodes of 30 Rock on Hulu over here.

• The half flusher.  There’s always a coworker who has yet to master the art of fully flushing the restroom toilet.  I imagine these are the same people who weren’t hugged enough as children.

• The coworker who’s always planning a potluck.  I don’t like potlucks because A) Your clothes are always covered in cat hair so I assume your pasta salad is too and  B) Because I got yelled at when I brought the plate of brownies back to my desk during the last potluck.

And finally…

• The coworker who takes casual Friday a little too casually.  Who wears short shorts?  Apparently Russell in accounting does.

Consider the Advantages of Pre-Owned Vehicles

Today late-model pre-owned vehicles are not only a safe buy but they make good financial sense.  Buying a pre-owned car or truck can save you money because a new car experiences its greatest loss in value within the first 12 to 18 months.  Rather than watching value decrease significantly in just the first year consider buying a pre-owned car or truck.  A pre-owned vehicle can have a lower purchase price with lower monthly payments and an extended warranty is usually still available.  Buying a pre-owned vehicle allows you to upgrade to the newer make and model you want and add more optional features.

The same car for less money

When you buy pre-owned you avoid the greatest amount of depreciation.  A new BMW 335 Convertible will cost you around $60,000.  Buy the same three year old BMW 335 with 36,000 miles and you’ll pay about $25,000 less.

More car for the same money

A nicely equipped new Mercedes-Benz E350 will cost you around $55,000.  But what if you want something bigger?  For the same amount of money you could buy a three-year-old 36,000 mile Mercedes-Benz S550 or a three-year-old 36,000 mile BMW 750, their flagship sedans.  Planning on growing your family?  You’ll find plenty of three-year-old Sport Utility Vehicles in the new C class price range.

You can also move up in prestige.  A new Toyota Camry XLE V6 with all the bells and whistles is a nice ride at $30,000 – it had better be.  But for the same price (or even a couple grand less) you could be driving a two-year-old Lexus ES350, Audi A6 or BMW 325i.

Certified Pre-Owned

Cars sold as certified pre-owned (CPO) bridge the gap between new and used.  They are subject to a rigorous inspection and repair process.  CPO cars will usually cost a bit more than a privately sold used vehicle but the added warranty and peace of mind makes them a good value.

As a skin cancer survivor I know how important it is to take care of my skin.  I had the right side of my face taken off last summer and it took ten procedures to put me back together again.  So when I say I am careful about what I put on my skin, I mean it.  What most people fail to realize is that their skin is an organ and what you put on it most definitely goes in it.  I have been looking tirelessly to find a good skincare line that is really organic and not just a bunch of hype.  There are a number of products that claim to be organic, but when you feel you need a PhD in chemistry just to decipher all the ingredients you quickly sense that it’s just another false claim.

Pam Gaber, CEO of Gabriel’s Angels

We all have a mission in life.  Some find it by self discovery; others find it when they least expect it.  Pam Gaber found her mission when she was 42 years old.  In 2000, Pam decided to leave behind  her high paced corporate lifestyle.  Six months later she adopted “the cutest Weimaraner in Arizona” named Gabriel.  Pam was a volunteer at the Crisis Nursery of Phoenix when she decided to dress up Gabriel as a reindeer and bring him to the Nursery’s Christmas party.  Her mission that day was just to make the children smile.

What she saw changed her life.  Children, who displayed aggressive behavior, became gentle.  Children who were too frightened to interact, opened up.  Watching the children learn about compassion from an animal, while receiving unconditional love, inspired Pam to create the nonprofit Gabriel’s Angels.  She had found her life’s mission.

Through Gabriel’s Angels, Pam has been able to introduce therapy animals into the lives of abused, neglected, and at-risk children by visiting crisis nurseries, domestic abuse shelters, homeless shelters and group therapy homes.  The children not only learn to interact and care for an animal, they learn to trust and to develop a relationship.  These memories and lessons will stay with them the rest of their lives.  The goal of the organization is to “increase the overall sense of well-being and happiness for children in a safe environment, and to build critical behaviors, such as trust, empathy, respect, tolerance and self-esteem.”  This outreach is a way for children to heal, with the hope of ending the cycle of violence.

In its first year, Gabriel’s Angels reached out to 1500 children.  Today, they work with 13,000 children and have expanded to Southern Arizona and Prescott.  There are 150 Volunteer Therapy Teams, 40 Helping Hands working with over 100 agencies.

Pam once said, “It’s better to be kind than great.”  She has proven to be both.  For this reason, she is May’s SmartFem Woman of the Month.

I want to share an experience I had with one home security company who solicited me door to door.  He came to the house claiming that his company had been called to install a new system at a house on the street behind me due to a recent break-in.  His story was he wanted to let the neighborhood know they were offering a “one day special.”  Little did he know that our SmartFem editor, Paul, is an avid tech researcher with a wide assortment of mobile apps on his phone including a neat location based app that allows you to crosscheck the local public criminal databases to see where the latest home invasions (and other crimes) have occurred.  Also, a quick online search of his company uncovered they had a “D” rating with the better business bureau and they had been banned from door to door sales in Louisiana for using exactly these scare tactics.  The icing on the cake was that their “free” installation required a two hundred dollar application fee.  It’s funny, I get mailers all the time offering a “free” system and installation but there always seems to be a catch.

I was pleasantly surprised when I was introduced to C Street Security.  They are a local Arizona company that has been in the business for over 30 years and all their installers are not only background checked but their fingerprints are on file with the police.  They use the same equipment and the same monitoring companies as the large well known brands but they cost significantly less.  I met with the partners of the company and was immediately impressed with their commitment to safety, customer service, and their refusal to engage in the all too common scare tactics used by their competitors.  And when C Street said “FREE” System and Installation they meant it.  No hidden application, installation, or startup fees.  Interestingly enough, my aunt, who had been with one of the big national brands for 25 years when her system finally died, was told she would have to pay $850 for a new system.  C Street provides lifetime service and maintenance and if you sell your home they will transfer the system to the new owners and give you a new system free of charge.
