Before reading: Ask children the following questions…
- Do you like to climb and play and run and jump?
- Where do you play? On What?
- Do you ever fall?
- What do you when you fall?
(KEY MESSAGE: GET RIGHT BACK UP WHEN YOU FALL)
-
At The Top
Up on the mountain top,
top, top…
There lived a mouse
With a hop,
hop, hop.
On the mountain top-
Would bop and bop
And never stopped…
But one day he fell,
And dropped,
drop drop.
And he even lost his hop,
hop, hop…
Yes,
Now he “dreamed”
Of the mountain top,
Where he skipped and played,
And hopped,
hop, hop…
Before he saw mountain tops,
He had climbed,
Over time-
Never stopped,
stop, stop…
And worked hard
To get to the top,
top, top,
…And he had to practice
His hop,
hop, hop…
At the mountain top,
There lived a mouse
With a hop,
hop, hop.
And this mouse with a hop
On the mountain top-
Would bop and bop
And never stopped…
Skipping and playing
On the mountain top…
And climbing back up
When he dropped
drop,drop…

- Do you get right back up and try again?
- Does it feel better to go away and stop playing, or to get back up and try again?
- Talk about what you should do when you fall, and why that makes you feel better.

Before Reading Questions:
- How are you doing today?
- When people greet you what do you say?
- What makes your day a good day?
-
Silly Sally McFine
And how are you doing, Mrs. Sally McFine?
“Oh, I’m doing just fine, Mr. Finkle McRhyme.”
And the dogs?
And your big purple house?
Oh, and how are your pigs and that cute little mouse?
“Just fine, fine, they’re all doing fine,”said Sally McFine.
“And you, Mr. Finkle –is everything fine?”
Even better than fine!
My life is divine.
My kitty had kittens,
So I’m a grandfather now.
I was really excited, and excited-how!
I ran around the block,
Giving neighbors cigars,
Then I bought some new polish
And shined all their cars.
Oh, and my mom called
And told me some wonderful news…
She’s sending me 100 pair of new shoes!
She’s coming for dinner tonight.
She’s bringing her elephant
And he’s spending the night.
Oh, and yesterday,
I went to bed – dreaming of snow,
And when I woke up…
What do you know?
There were snowflakes
And my house was covered with ice,
And my friends made me snow cones,
Wasn’t that nice!
Oh, and then Mr. Doodle,
The man from next door –
Left a basket of chocolate and fruit on my floor,
And…”
“O.K. Mr. Finkle,” said Sally McFine,
“You’ve said quite enough.
I must go, it’s night time!
You talked and you talked
And then you talked some more,
I really must leave,
I should have left before.
My dogs and my kids,
And my big purple house
Are home waiting for me-
Not to mention my mouse.
So I’m taking those pigs
And those rabbits of mine,
And we’re going straight home
‘Cause it’s past my bedtime!”
“Anyway,”said Mrs. Sally McFine,
“I’ve run out of stories,
and I’ve run out of rhyme.
And the next time I ask
“How you’re doing” one day…
Please say “Just Fine!”
And then be on your way…”

Gabby Gabriela
Gabby Gabriela was given the gift of gab.
She uses it quite frequently,
When she’s feeling good or bad.
She talks in school,
She talks at home,
She talks to friends,
And when alone…
Gabby Gabriela is a girl who loves to gab.
She talks when people talk to her,
But when “they” talk, she’s mad.
She talks about herself a lot,
And she talks about her dreams.
She talks about her history,
And her life is all she sees.
She never ever listens,
That would be a waste of time.
She thinks she’s smarter than the rest,
Of all of humankind.
Too bad that Gabby never stopped
To hear her brilliant friends.
She talked so much,
She missed the teacher-
Saying when class ends.
So Gabby Gabriela
Is all alone in class today.
She wasn’t listening when the teacher said
“Go out and play!”

-
Mama and Me
There’s no one else who bakes a cake
As good as “Mama and Me.”
And late each night,
When there are two awake,
Guess who? It’s “Mama and Me!”
When the T.V. is on,
We sit and watch all day,
Just “Mama and Me.”
And sometimes when we want some fun,
We play. Yep! “Mama and Me.”
Oh, and when we go out,
Sometimes I shout,
“Hey look, it’s Mama and Me!”
And when I sleep,
In my hand I keep
My Mama’s hand with Me.
Well after all, if I’m big or small,
She’ll always be “Mama” to Me…
And in the end,
When I need a friend,
I’ll call my “Mama” to Me.
Because late at night,
When I stay awake,
Who’s there?
Just “Mama and Me.”
And there’s no one else
Who bakes a cake
As good as “Mama and Me.”
