Urban Decay primer is a GREAT product. ELF is a good option if you want an affordable color substitution for one of the professonal lines. I do have some ELF shadows I use, but as you mention, there are subtle differences and those differences can be a make or break. When it falls off your brush, it falls off your eyes too. I have tried them all side by side and I truly believe MAC offers the best value and product. I would love to hear if you have tried any of the new palettes from Urban Decay. They have some amazing stuff and beautiful stuff out for spring 2013. =)

Urban Decay primer is your best bet all around. Even if you use a drugstore brand or, better, e.l.f, it's still going to hold the color. I don't see a different between my Covergirl or UD colors (except for the application; that shit will fall off your brush).
