4 Ways to Avoid Losing Yourself in a New Relationship

From the nonstop butterflies to those sweet morning texts, nothing beats the feeling of being in a new relationship. That special someone is all you can think about and is probably the reason you’re catching yourself daydreaming at work too. There’s nothing wrong with devoting your attention to someone else, but it can lead to forgetting about your own needs. Here are some easy ways to stay true to yourself when you’re officially off the market:

Schedule some alone time. When you’re dating someone new, the last thing you want is space. While you may (naturally) want to spend every second of every day with your beau, save yourself some alone time too! From sorting out your thoughts to finally finishing that juicy book, there are endless benefits to spending time alone. Taking time away from your new relationship to focus on yourself will only bring the two of you closer in the end.

Keep your guilty pleasures. Eating an entire tub of Ben and Jerry’s? Binge-watching OITNB? Whatever made you happiest before you were snatched up, keep doing exactly that. Remembering your guilty pleasures will come in handy when your boyfriend cancels plans last-minute. This way, you have something to fill your time and keep you smiling regardless!

Plan a night out with friends. While there’s still only one of you, there are now more people in your life who will want your time and attention. Your man may be busy sweeping you off your feet, but remember that your friends want you all to themselves too. Balancing the two relationships can be difficult, but they will be more than happy to see you even just for the occasional girl’s night!

Love yourself first. The biggest mistake you can make when entering a new relationship is relying on that person to give you confidence and security. The saying “love yourself before you love someone else” may be cliche, but it’s also true. Knowing you can stand on your own two feet with or without that person will give you strength that will only carry the relationship even further!
