It’s that time of year again! The weather is getting cooler, spooky decorations have taken over homes, horror films are on constant replay, and a bowl of candy is always close by… ready to consume. Halloween! A holiday bringing costumes, trick-or-treating, parties filled with Ouija boards and other scary elements. Have you ever wondered where Halloween came from?

Halloween traditions come from many different cultures and customs. One of the main thoughts is that Halloween came from the ancient Celtic festival called Samhain. During this festival, people would wear costumes and light bonfires in order to ward off evil spirits.  You see, they believed that ghosts, witches, and demons were able to walk among the living on October 31st. People would sacrifice animals and food in attempt to help lead evil spirits away from living souls. Spppoookkkyyy! How interesting that the creatures they wanted to keep away are some of the popular costumes worn nowadays!

Which leads me to the modern celebration of Halloween. Contrary to popular beliefs, it is not just about the candy! Trick-or-treating, of course! But, haunted houses are a must! “13th Floor Haunted House,” “Chambers of Fear,” and “Fear Farm,” are only a few popular destinations for those celebrating this day of fear!

And don’t forget about costumes! Whether it’s being able to fly like a fairy or cast spells like a witch; dressing up as another person or creature is a tradition for this holiday! I get it! Why not walk around pretending to be someone you aren’t for a night? Be a devil and channel that inner dark side without feeling guilt or a superhero who is adored by everyone. It’s Halloween!

Halloween has been a shared tradition for centuries. People all over the world dress up and partake in frightening events and this Halloween will be no different. Have fun!
