When it comes to any form of media, like movies, television shows, music, and even video games, it almost seems like the world has seen it all doesn’t it? More often than not lately, our old favorites are either receiving prequels, sequels, and spinoffs, or they are being completely remade and given a facelift. Now more than ever, there seems to have been a need to heighten the amount of nostalgia in the media. However, are these attempts at bringing audiences back to their golden days of entertainment enhancing our classic favorites, or simply ruining them? There are hundreds of examples of works being bettered or being made worse, so for now we will focus on the hits and the flops that have occurred in the film industry.

For the last twenty to thirty years or so, there have been very many types of movies being made that try to bring back the stories we love through prequels, sequels, and spin offs. Some have been absolutely successful, grossing even more millions in the box office than the original movies. Yet, there have also been those that have brought utter disgrace to the films they were based off of. In Hollywood, when it comes to these types of movies, it really is a hit or miss.

These films took the stories we moviegoers fell in love with, and brought them to a whole other level. Some may even say they outrank the originals, allowing fans to cherish the franchise as a whole instead of having to pick and choose. There are numerous movies that have accomplished this amazing feat, but listed below are a few that have really been loved by the masses. I visited a few articles from imdb.com and quora.com, along with adding a few from my own opinion.

  • The Mummy Returns
  • The God Father: Part II
  • Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
  • The Dark Knight
  • Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
  • X2: X-Men United
  • Toy Story 2
  • Aliens
  • Spiderman 2
  • Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  • Terminator 2
  • Shrek 2

Nostalgia Ruined: Movies That Did It Wrong

Luckily there seem to be more movie prequels, sequels, and spinoffs that have done their original movie justice out there. However, there have been some films that have almost ruined their franchise completely with such awful movies. With a few of my own personal movie choices, along with some movies listed on salon.com’s article, “7 Classic Movie Franchises That Were (Nearly) Ruined by Horrible Sequels,” here is a list of the movies that crushed and almost extinguished our nostalgia for their original counterparts.

  • Zoolander 2
  • Dumb and Dumber To
  • Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
  • Jaws 2
  • The Hangover Part II
  • Grease 2
  • Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menacenostalgia movies_ popcorn

Remakes of the Originals

When those in the world of movie-making get tired of making second, third, fourth, and so on versions of original movies, sometimes they simply decided to remake the original itself. Again, like any newer version of the things we consumers love, it can either impress us or anger us as audience members. Listed below are some more examples of films in the industry that both fueled our nostalgia and allowed it to grow in the new generation, or just let our love for our favorite classics go down in flames.

Sadly, with the good must come the bad.
